Different Types Of Welding Helmets

Blog

Personal protection equipment (PPE) is essential when welding. Ultraviolet and infrared light beams could damage one's eyesight. Welding helmets consist of fixed and adjustable models. A covered helmet will possess a lens coating.

Variables

During a welding process, a welding operator should be properly suited up at all times. This involves wearing protective clothing, gloves, goggles, and a helmet. A quality helmet will come with a safety rating. The rating will specify how effective a helmet's lens is at blocking out harmful light rays. The size of the lens may differ, based on who manufactured a helmet and the actual types of welding processes that a helmet is designed for.

A helmet that has a wide lens located along the front of it will provide more visibility. This type of helmet is suitable for use in a large open space that will require multiple welding operations to be performed in succession. A helmet that contains a narrow lens will provide more focus. If a small item is being welded, or if there is limited space to perform a welding process, having access to a helmet with a smaller lens will aid an operator in keeping their focus on the task at hand. They will be able to see directly in front of them.

Helmet Styles

A fixed helmet contains a lens that will not automatically darken. An end-user will need to adjust the level of darkness that the lens provides, prior to putting on their gear and beginning a welding process. This type of helmet is best suited for welding operations that will remain constant. If the same type of material will be welded during a work shift, a welding operator can adjust the lens darkness one time and leave their helmet on.

An adjustable helmet is one that will allow an end-user to program the level of darkness that they prefer. When the operator puts on their helmet, the lens will be at its lightest shade. Once the welding process is about to begin, the lens will automatically darken to the desired shade. This type of helmet will contain sensors.

The sensors will determine when the lens will need to darken. After a welding process has concluded, the lens will return to a lighter shade. This type of helmet is best suited for welding applications that will fluctuate. Since the person wearing this type of helmet will be able to modify the tint level automatically, they will be able to quickly change the tint level as needed.
