How To Select A Pharmaceutical Milling Device

Blog

Those in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries often rely on the use of various milling devices and machines to convert their raw products into pills, capsules, and other easily used forms. However, there is a wide range of different milling devices to choose from. Choosing the right one is dependent on determining exactly what you need your milling device to do. Once that information is realized, companies can easily select the best milling devices to meet their needs.

Wet Or Dry Materials

One of the first considerations is whether the material to be milled will be wet or dry when it comes into contact with the milling machinery. Dry materials can typically be effectively milled with a simpler, cheaper device.

However, wet materials, particularly if they are very lumpy, will often require a more advanced milling device. While some milling machines can work with both types of materials, better results are typically achieved with a device specifically designed to work with the material and material consistency at hand.

Sanitary Needs

For many milled medical products, sanitation is an extreme priority. Thus, companies must carefully research what methods are used to ensure proper sanitation and safety of the milled products. In some cases, depending on the product and its intended use, the machinery may need to be USDA certified.

All companies, especially those new to the industry, must take care to understand the sanitation standards applied to them and to ensure that the milling equipment they choose is capable of producing products that meet those standards.

Uniformity

Almost all products produced through pharmaceutical milling will need to be completely and perfectly uniform in both size and shape. Good milling devices will have clearly outlined protocols in place to demonstrate how they ensure uniformity. However, with any system, most industries will likely need to perform further product control testing to ensure exact uniformity needs are being met.

Surface Area

Finally, with many medically milled products, the surface area is an important factor. In most cases, an increased surface area of the milled product leads to better absorption and effectiveness. Professionals should be aware of the ideal surface area for their products and should find or customize a milling machine that can meet their desired parameters.

While, for many professionals, choosing a milling machine is simple, this task can be difficult for those in newer or less regulated industries. However, the utmost care and concern should always be placed into selecting the proper pharmaceutical milling device. Look for a milling device like the 197 Mill Quadro Comil or other types.
