Your baby was nice and safe and cozy in your protective womb. Then, you give birth and your baby is suddenly in a large, cold, and loud environment. From the moment they're born, they will be introduced to numerous new things starting from new sounds and smells to new sights, tastes, and physical feelings. Understandably, this can be very overwhelming. However, there is something that you can do to help calm your baby and to help them feel more secure and that is to swaddle them. If you aren't familiar with swaddling, keep reading this information that covers a lot on the topic.
What is swaddling?
Swaddling is the act of wrapping an infant in a blanket by using a specific method of folding the blanket. Once wrapped in the blanket using the swaddling method, the infant will have very limited movement which can cause them to feel secure as if they are still in the womb.
How is swaddling done?
In order to swaddle the baby, you will fold in a corner of the blanket. This is where the baby's head goes so it will remain out of the blanket once swaddled. Set the baby on the blanket with their head where you tucked the corner in. Now, you pull one side over the baby and tuck the corner under them. Take the corner at the baby's feet and cover their legs with it. Finally, you take the other side of the blanket and wrap it around the baby. The end result will have your baby looking similar to a little burrito.
How does swaddling benefit the baby?
When your baby is tucked tightly in the swaddle, they will feel more like they are still in the womb, due to their restricted movement. Also, swaddling mimics your touch, so with the baby having the blanket all around them, they won't feel so alone. Swaddling also prevents the baby from suffering the natural jerking motions they tend to have that can quickly wake them from sleep in a manner that startles them and gets them crying. This is why swaddling is a good thing to do anytime you want the baby to rest.
What do you use to swaddle the baby?
You can't use just any blanket to swaddle the baby. It has to be a receiving blanket because it is the right size and the right thickness. A great receiving blanket to use is a 100-percent cotton baby swaddling blanket because it will be soft, durable, and easy to clean.
